Inter – American juridical committee to hold its centennial session in Peru

WASHINGTON, USA – The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of Peru agreed that the 100th regular session of the Inter-American Juridical Committee (IAJC) will be held from May 2-6 in Lima.

The secretary-general of the OAS, Luis Almagro, and the Permanent Representative of Peru to the OAS, Harold Forsyth, signed the agreement at a ceremony at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

Secretary-General Almagro noted that this is the first time in two years that the IAJC has met face to face and said that direct contact offers “the members of the Committee the possibility of establishing direct contact with representatives of various areas of the State that deal with international law.”

“The Committee has contributed significantly to the development of non-binding proposals that seek to be useful to States on issues such as the protection of personal data, access to public information, international commercial contracts, cybernetic operations of the state and the immunity of international organizations, among others,” added secretary-general Almagro.

For his part, ambassador Forsyth celebrated the fact that the IAJC is holding its centennial session in his country, stating that this is an opportunity for Peru to “continue ratifying our vocation of unrestricted respect for international law.”

“When international law is going through a global crisis, it is important and vital that the OAS member states, and specifically this committee, reinforce the great paradigms of respect for institutions, the protection of human rights, the separation of powers, democracy and the rule of law,” added the Peruvian diplomat.

The Inter-American Juridical Committee – headquartered in Rio de Janeiro is the OAS advisory body on juridical matters under the OAS Charter.
