New ambassador of Suriname presents credentials at OAS

WASHINGTON, USA – The new Permanent Representative of Suriname, Martin Schalkwijk, presented his credentials Monday to the secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

Secretary-General Almagro highlighted ambassador Schalkwijk’s career and said that his knowledge will be a fundamental contribution to the Organization.

“Ambassador, we appreciate your noble work and broad knowledge on social justice issues and trade-related matters from your experience in the foreign service and academia. We are confident that these skills will serve us all well in our deliberations,” added secretary-general Almagro.

For his part, ambassador Schalkwijk affirmed that his country and the OAS share the same values.

“The OAS plays a pivotal role in promoting integral development, multidimensional security, safeguarding democracy and human rights, as well as strengthening regional cooperation in general. These are all ideals which Suriname fully supports,” he added.

Suriname has been a member state of the OAS since 1977.
