Time waits for no man, and neither does crime: Support Taiwan’s participation in INTERPOL as an observer

By Amino C.Y. Chi, Director General, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami

MIAMI, USA – The International Criminal Police Organization, also known as  Interpol, is an international organization that facilitates worldwide police cooperation and crime control. As globalization has developed, both physically and virtually, it has to a large extent exacerbated transnational crimes, putting all countries and people at risk. It is thus crucial that nations worldwide work together, provide mutual assistance, and share information to combat transnational crime.

Criminal investigations are often battles of brain and brawn, and a race against time. For police to be able to take timely action before suspects evade arrest and evidence is lost, cooperation among partner forces worldwide is essential. As part of this, the timely exchange of intelligence is key to combating transnational crime.

However, due to its exclusion from INTERPOL, Taiwan can only indirectly seek urgently needed intelligence through international cooperation. Even if the information is obtained, it is often outdated. These regrettable circumstances often give more time for transnational crime to grow, causing the world heavier losses. Despite the time and effort invested, investigations often yield no concrete results.

Taiwan’s police authorities are committed to working with the rest of the world to fight transnational crime. Therefore, we urge your support of Taiwan’s participation in INTERPOL, to ensure a seamless global security network!
