PNM manifesto no different to PM Rowley leadership: No substance, no vision or plans for national development

Dear Sir

Mere days before the August 10, General Election, and with the nation facing significant uncertainty, the Peoples National Movement (PNM) released a “manifesto” which is akin to Dr Keith Rowley’s leadership, as it lacks substance.

This was a pathetic, last-ditch effort by Dr Rowley that failed to make the grade. There is no vision or suggestion for a better future for Trinidad and Tobago.

They have not presented a plan, but a mashup of rehashed promises from successive budgets over their term, their 2015 manifesto, the reworked Vision 2030, and the Roadmap to Recovery report.

It is a slap in the face to our citizens that the PNM is using the government’s actions in dealing with COVID-19 as the basis for their election campaign. The PNM is far removed from the reality of the economic crisis facing our nation, which has come about due to their incompetence and mismanagement. They failed to put forward any substantive plans for diversification, revenue generation or job creation.

It is unacceptable that the PNM is shamelessly trying to take credit for several projects that were completed by the government led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, by listing them as PNM achievements. One of these is the Couva Children’s Hospital – a project Dr Rowley vilified for over four years, and it was only when the pandemic hit that they allowed access to this state-of-the-art facility.

This document is an insult to the voting population. The people of Trinidad and Tobago deserve better than the arrogance and incompetence of Dr Rowley and his team.

In stark contrast, the UNC’s Economic Transformation Masterplan is premised on a progressive foundation influenced by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The UNC’s plan for the transformation of Trinidad and Tobago

We have carefully drafted a strategic plan for sustainable development with emphasis on:

  • Job creation, Infrastructural establishment and maintenance;
  • Lowering taxes to put more money in people’s pockets;
  • Delivering a frequent and reliable nation-wide water supply;
  • The modernisation and expansion of education;
  • The diversification of the economy – strengthening traditional sectors and introducing   innovative new industries;
  • Facilitating opportunity for upward social mobility, especially for young people;
  • Caring for the most vulnerable in society;
  • Ensuring safe and secure communities, and much more.

We have a plan to create 50,000 new jobs and improve the lives of all citizens of our nation. This is our pledge to Trinidad and Tobago.

In this election, there is a clear choice facing voters. A choice between a leader and team that has resoundingly failed, and one who has a clear plan to move our country forward.

The evidence is indisputable. Dr Rowley and the PNM have no concept of how to responsibly manage the affairs of this nation and improve the people’s standard of living. The United National Congress is the only party that has a plan to transform our nation.
